How to Write a Google Business Profile Description

A local customer finds your business on Google Maps, taps your listing, and reads two lines before deciding whether to call you or the shop next door.

A local customer finds your business on Google Maps, taps your listing, and reads two lines before deciding whether to call you or the shop next door. Most owners fill in their Google Business Profile description once, in a hurry, and never look at it again. That short box is one of the few places on the listing where you control every word.

I write these for clients ranging from a two person bakery to a regional plumbing firm. The good ones share a structure, and the weak ones share the same few mistakes. Here is how to write a description that answers the questions customers actually have.

What the Google Business Profile description does

The description sits in the "From the business" section of your listing. You get up to 750 characters, roughly 110 to 130 words. On many phones, only the first 250 or so characters show before the reader has to tap "More."

That means the description does two jobs. The opening lines must make a quick case to someone skimming. The rest gives detail to the smaller group who want to know more before they get in touch.

Google also has rules for this field. The description must not include:

  • Links or web addresses.
  • Promotional offers, prices, discounts or phrases like "best deal in town."
  • Phone numbers, which already appear elsewhere on the profile.
  • Misleading claims or content unrelated to the business.
  • All capital letters or strings of special characters.

Breaking these can get the description rejected or removed, sometimes without warning. It is also worth knowing that customers cannot edit or suggest changes to this field the way they can with your hours or address, so what you write stays exactly as you left it until you change it. That makes a yearly check even more important.

A simple structure for your Google Business Profile description

Write it in three short parts. Each one answers a question customers ask before they choose a local business.

Lines 1 to 2: who you are and who you serve

Name what you do, where you do it and who it is for. Use plain words your customers would use, not industry jargon. "Family run bakery in Northside baking sourdough, pastries and custom celebration cakes" is clear in one sentence.

Lines 3 to 5: why choose you

Give two or three concrete reasons. Numbers work well: years in business, the number of jobs completed, the hours you open, a specific service radius. "Open from 6:30 am on weekdays" is more useful than "convenient hours."

Final lines: what to do next

Tell people what to expect when they get in touch. Same day callbacks, walk-ins welcome, or orders needed 48 hours ahead. This closes the gap between reading and acting.

One test I use with every client: cover the business name and read the description aloud. If it could describe three competitors on the same street, it is not finished. Add the detail only you can claim, whether that is the oven you bake in, the trade body you belong to or the neighbourhood you grew up in.

A before and after rewrite example

Here is a typical first draft from a small electrical contractor, followed by a rewrite.

Before: "We are the leading electrical company providing top quality electrical services. Our team is committed to excellence and customer satisfaction. Contact us today for all your electrical needs!"

After: "Licensed electricians serving homes and small shops across Eastfield and nearby towns since 2009. We handle panel upgrades, EV charger installs, rewiring for older houses and fault finding. Most callouts are booked within two working days, and every quote is written and fixed before work starts. Our team of six is fully insured and cleans up before leaving. Call or message for a quote; we reply the same working day."

The first version could belong to any electrician in the country. The second answers where, what, how fast and what to expect, in about 75 words. It also mentions specific services that customers search for, without listing them in a block.

Why stuffing keywords into the description backfires

A lot of advice tells owners to pack the description with every service and town name they want to rank for. I push clients away from this.

Google has said the description is not a major factor in local rankings. What drives visibility far more is your business category, the distance to the searcher, your reviews and the activity on your profile. Stuffing the description with "plumber Eastfield, emergency plumber Eastfield, cheap plumber Eastfield" does little for rankings and a lot of damage to the reader's trust. It looks spammy, and people choose the next listing.

Include your main services and service area once each, in natural sentences. Spend the effort you would have put into keywords on the parts of the profile that do move rankings and clicks. Fresh, well lit photos make a visible difference, as we covered in Google Business Profile photos that bring in local customers. A steady stream of recent reviews matters even more, and the review request text that gets local customers to reply shows how to ask without feeling pushy.

Writing tips that make a short description work

  • Front-load the opening. Put the most useful facts in the first 250 characters so they show without tapping.
  • Write like you talk to customers. If you would never say "solutions" at the counter, do not write it here.
  • Use specifics over adjectives. "Trained in 2014" beats "experienced." "Free parking behind the shop" beats "easy to visit."
  • Match your other channels. The services and areas you list should match your website and signage, so customers do not get mixed messages.
  • Read it on a phone. Draft it, paste it into the profile, then view the listing on your own phone before you call it done.
  • Review it twice a year. Update it when services, hours or your team size change.

After saving, Google may take a few days to review and publish the new text. If it is rejected, check it against the content rules above. The usual cause is a link, a price or a promotional phrase.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a Google Business Profile description be?

The limit is 750 characters. Aim to use most of it, around 600 to 750 characters, but make sure the first 250 work on their own. Those are the lines most mobile users see before tapping for more.

Does the business description help local SEO?

Only slightly, if at all. Google has indicated that the description is not a major ranking factor. It matters more for converting people who already found your listing into calls and visits.

Why was my Google Business Profile description rejected?

The most common reasons are links, phone numbers, prices or promotional offers in the text. Capital letters used for emphasis and unrelated content can also trigger a rejection. Remove these and submit it again.
