Google Business Profile Photos That Bring In Local Customers

A bakery owner I work with had exactly four photos on her Google listing: a blurry logo, a stock image of croissants and two customer shots taken at night. People kept calling to ask whether there was parking and which door to use.

A bakery owner I work with had exactly four photos on her Google listing: a blurry logo, a stock image of croissants and two customer shots taken at night. People kept calling to ask whether there was parking and which door to use. Twelve new photos later, those calls almost stopped, and requests for directions went up noticeably within two months.

Google Business Profile photos are often the first real look a customer gets at your business, sometimes before they ever see your website. Google has long reported that profiles with photos get more direction requests and more website clicks than those without. The good news is that you do not need a photographer or a budget. You need the right twelve to twenty shots, taken with a phone, and a simple habit of keeping them fresh.

What Customers Look for in Your Photos

People scrolling a map are trying to answer practical questions fast. Is this place open and real? Will I find it? Is it the kind of place I want? Your photos should answer those three questions before your description does.

That is why a single polished product shot does less than a plain photo of your front door. The customer standing on the pavement at 5:45 pm needs to recognise the entrance, not admire the plating.

The Google Business Profile Photos Every Business Needs

Use this as a checklist. Most small businesses can cover it in one afternoon.

Entrance and parking1 or 2Where do I go in?
Interior3 or 4What is it like inside?
Products or work4 to 6What do I get?
Team at work2 or 3Who will I deal with?

Service businesses without a shopfront, like plumbers or cleaners, can swap interiors for photos of the van, the team on a job and before and after shots, with the client's permission.

Shooting Good Photos on a Phone

A recent smartphone is more than enough. The difference between amateur and decent photos is mostly light and framing.

  • Shoot in daylight. For exteriors, mid morning or late afternoon gives softer shadows. Avoid shooting straight into the sun.
  • Clean the lens. A fingerprint is the number one cause of hazy photos.
  • Hold the phone level. Turn on the grid in your camera settings so walls and doorframes stay straight.
  • Clear the clutter. Move bins, boxes and cables out of frame before you shoot an interior.
  • Use real people. A barber cutting hair is more convincing than an empty chair.
  • Shoot landscape for most images. Google crops photos into different shapes on maps and search, and a horizontal frame with the subject in the middle survives that cropping best.

Take three or four versions of every shot and pick the best one later. It costs nothing and saves a second trip outside when the first attempt turns out slightly blurred.

Google accepts JPG and PNG files between 10 KB and 5 MB, with 720 by 720 pixels as the recommended size. Any modern phone photo clears that easily.

Logo and Cover Photo Mistakes

The logo appears small and square, often cropped into a circle. A wide wordmark becomes unreadable at that size, so upload a square version with generous padding. If your designer never gave you one, our list of logo files to get from your designer explains what to ask for.

The cover photo is a preference, not a guarantee. Google may show a different image first, often one a customer uploaded. That is one more reason to fill your profile with good photos, so that whatever Google picks still looks like you.

The Myths About Photos and Rankings

You will find plenty of advice claiming that geotagging photos before upload, by adding location data to the file, boosts your local ranking. I would not spend a minute on it. Google strips most of that data on upload, and there is no reliable evidence it helps. The same goes for naming files with keywords.

The other myth is that you must post new photos every day. Daily uploads of near identical shots do nothing for customers and eat time you could spend running the business. What matters is that your photos are accurate, varied and reasonably recent. If you renovated last year and your profile still shows the old counter, that is a real problem. A tired photo set is a trust problem first and a ranking question a distant second.

Avoid stock images, text banners laid over photos and heavy filters too. They make a profile look less real, and Google's guidelines say photos should represent the business as it actually is.

Handling Customer Photos

Customers can add their own photos, and you cannot simply delete them. You can report a photo that is offensive, irrelevant or not of your business. Most customer photos are honest and some are unflattering, a dim plate under restaurant lighting, for example.

The answer is volume. When your profile holds 15 or 20 clear photos of your own, a few poor customer shots matter much less. Encourage happy customers to add photos when they leave a review. A short, polite message works, and our guide to review request texts that get local customers to reply includes wording you can adapt.

A Simple Upkeep Schedule

Once your first set is uploaded, keep it current with a light routine:

  1. Add two or three new photos each month, such as new products, seasonal displays or a recent job.
  2. Replace exterior photos whenever the signage, paint or entrance changes.
  3. Review customer photos once a month and report anything that breaks the rules.
  4. Check the photo insights in your profile dashboard each quarter to see which images get viewed most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload videos as well as photos?

Yes. Short videos of up to 30 seconds can be added to your profile. A 15 second walk from the street to your door is one of the most useful clips you can post.

Why has my photo not appeared yet?

New uploads are reviewed and can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days to show. If a photo never appears, it may have broken a guideline, often because of text overlays or low quality.

Should I hire a photographer?

Not to start. A phone and a free afternoon cover the basics. A professional shoot makes sense later if you want a consistent look across your profile, website and social media.

Your First Photo Afternoon

Pick a dry, bright afternoon this week. Shoot three exterior angles, your entrance, four interior views, five products or jobs and two shots of your team at work. Upload them with a square logo, then put a monthly reminder in your calendar to add two or three more. That small effort answers the questions customers ask before they visit and makes your listing look like a business worth choosing. For more practical advice, browse our small business section.
